Location
The Grand Account
Lausanne rises in terraces from Lake Geneva, a city of steep streets, Gothic spires and Olympic ambition. The International Olympic Committee has governed world sport from here for over a century, and the city carries that inheritance lightly — medieval cathedral above, Belle Époque palaces at the water's edge in Ouchy below. It is a university town, a medical capital, a place where old Vaudois families and international fortunes coexist without friction. The elite come for the clinics, the boarding schools, the lake light that painters never quite captured. Lausanne offers what its larger neighbours cannot: grandeur at a human scale, with the Savoy Alps standing watch across the water.
From Geneva, the journey is a forty-five-minute meditation. Your chauffeur collects you on the Quai Gustave-Ador and takes the A1 eastward, the motorway running parallel to the lake through the Vaudois countryside, vineyards rising on the left, water silvering on the right. The S-Class is the natural instrument here — composed, silent, unhurried at the Swiss limit. He has studied your arrival: the descent through Lausanne's contours to Ouchy is timed to avoid the university hour, and the hotel has been advised to the minute. A cashmere throw in winter, the day's Financial Times folded on the rear seat, telephone calls undisturbed. You arrive as if you had simply changed rooms.
The Beau-Rivage Palace in Ouchy is the reason many come at all — four hectares of gardens on the waterfront, and Anne-Sophie Pic's restaurant within, where Vaudois produce meets one of the world's great culinary minds. The Lausanne Palace, in the upper town, suits those who prefer the city's pulse. Walk the Olympic Museum's lakeside park, take an hour at Plateforme 10's galleries beside the station, then a private boat toward Évian as the light fails. Your chauffeur is at the jetty when you return. Lausanne asks nothing of you except that you slow down — and so, finally, you do.
