The Grand Account
Lugano is where Switzerland speaks Italian and means it. Palm trees line the lakefront, the arcaded lanes of the old town smell of espresso and pasticceria, and Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore stand like sentinels above water the colour of dark glass. Yet beneath the Mediterranean ease runs Swiss order: Lugano is the country's third financial centre, its banks serving families from Milan to far beyond. Hermann Hesse spent his last decades in the hills above, in Montagnola, and understood why — the light here is southern, the discretion northern. The elite come for both: a lake villa's privacy with a private banker ten minutes away.
This is FFGR's great alpine crossing. Your chauffeur leaves Zurich on the A4 past Lake Zug, joining the A2 toward the Gotthard, the landscape sharpening into granite as the motorway climbs the Urner valley. Then the tunnel — seventeen kilometres of engineered silence — and the world changes: Ticino's light, vineyards, church towers in Italian stone. Allow around two hours and three quarters; the Rolls-Royce Cullinan makes the distance feel like privilege rather than effort, commanding and serene. He pauses, if you wish, above Bellinzona's three castles before the final descent to the lake. Espresso preferences noted, Italian and German spoken, every kilometre accounted for.
Stay at the Splendide Royal on the lakefront, a palace since 1887, or above the water at Villa Principe Leopoldo, where the terrace dinner is reason enough for the journey. Mornings belong to the lake: a private boat to Gandria, the fishing village stacked against the mountainside, or the funicular up Monte Brè for the long view toward Italy. The LAC arts centre anchors the cultural afternoon; the old town's tailors and jewellers fill what remains. As evening settles, the lights of Campione appear across the water. Your chauffeur stands by the Cullinan, unhurried. Ticino does the rest.
