Location
The Grand Account
Lucerne is Switzerland distilled: the wooden Chapel Bridge angling across the Reuss since the fourteenth century, the Pilatus and Rigi massifs rising straight from the lake, swans drifting past Renaissance façades. Wagner composed at Tribschen on these shores; today the KKL concert hall, Jean Nouvel's blade of glass on the waterfront, hosts the great orchestras of the world each summer. The city has welcomed travellers of consequence since the Grand Tour, and it retains that courtesy — unhurried, polished, quietly proud. Visitors of rank come for the festival, the watch ateliers, and the particular stillness of Lake Lucerne at first light, when the mountains double themselves in the water.
From Zurich, your chauffeur takes the A4 southward past Lake Zug, the Rigi growing larger in the windscreen, and delivers you to Lucerne's lakefront in under an hour. For families, the V-Class VIP is the right choice — six leather seats in conference, children settled, luggage invisible; for two, the S-Class glides. The ritual is unchanged: doors opened from the outside, itinerary confirmed the previous evening, the day's weather over the lake already checked. Should the Bürgenstock be your destination, he continues around the lake's southern shore, climbing the forest road to the ridge, pausing — if you wish — at the belvedere where the whole of Central Switzerland presents itself.
The Bürgenstock Resort, on its ridge five hundred metres above the lake, remains one of Europe's most spectacular addresses; Audrey Hepburn married in its chapel. In town, the Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern has restored Belle Époque glamour to the waterfront, and the Schweizerhof keeps its old-world welcome. Cross the Chapel Bridge early, before the city wakes. Visit a Bucherer master watchmaker by appointment, take a private steamer toward Vitznau in the afternoon, and end with the Lucerne Festival at the KKL, the lake black and silver outside. Your chauffeur waits beneath the plane trees. Nothing more needs arranging.
